1.  Judge to Sentence Trump Before Inauguration in Hush Money Case

Although New York Judge Juan Merchan has put off sentencing on his January 10 date for Trump before the inaugural ceremonies on January 20, it was all in connection to a hush-money case against the former President. He had already been found guilty of misleading business records in 2023 because he attempted to hide a payment of $130,000 to Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election. There was the possibility of no jail for the convict, but discarding his case was the judge’s preference for the arrangement. Trump repudiated it as a political attack, while experts involved in law anticipated the possibility of an appeal.

2.  Misinformation on New Orleans Attack Suspect

An allegation is spreading through the Internet with the help of a Fox News report that the US Army veteran responsible for the attack against the truck in New Orleans on a New Year’s day is Shamsud-Din Jabbar and that he is an illegal entrant to the United States. There was talk of him crossing the border recently, but Fox then amended itself, stating the entry was in mid-November. Yet, the politicians have continued to propagate the lies, even when it has become clear from what Jabbar has stated that he is a US citizen.

3.  Mike Johnson Re-elected as House Speaker with Trump’s Backing

Republican Mike Johnson narrowly secured re-election as House Speaker with President-elect Donald Trump’s support, overcoming strong opposition from hard-right GOP holdouts for a vote tally of 218-215. The outcome made for a rattled beginning to the new Congress, which sets up trouble for Johnson ahead. Even Trump’s endorsement cannot save him from the fragile leadership caused by opposition in his party.

4.  US Faces Surge in Violence and Extremism as 2025 Begins

Entering 2025, the United States has already set disturbing waves of violent incidents, part of which includes a huge store of explosives discovered in Virginia. This is coming on the heels of a deadly New Year attack in New Orleans by a military veteran connected to the ISIS and resulted in killing at least 14 persons. Growing political violence and extremism are concerns facing the country today. This comes with warming up between estranged sides after the presidential election.
